Note: Effective August 1, 2017 the text shown below equally footnote 3 was added to
Second Class requirements 5b and 5c and First Grade requirements 6a and 6e.

Effective on January 1, 2018, the VARSITY SCOUT program was discontinued past BSA.


  • Camping and OUTDOOR ETHICS
      1. Since joining Male child Scouts, participate in 10 split up troop/patrol activities, at to the lowest degree six of which must be held outdoors. Of the outdoor activities, at least three must include overnight camping. These activities exercise not include troop or patrol meetings. On campouts, spend the dark in a tent that you pitch or other structure that you assist cock, such equally a lean-to, snow cave, or tepee.
      2. Explain each of the principles of Tread Lightly! and tell how you skilful them on a campout or outing. This outing must be unlike from the ones used for Tenderfoot requirement 1c and Second Class requirement 1b.
  • COOKING
      1. Help programme a menu for one of the above campouts that includes at least one breakfast, one lunch, and one dinner and that requires cooking at least two of the meals. Tell how the menu includes the foods from MyPlate or the current USDA nutritional model and how it meets nutritional needs for the planned activeness or campout.
      2. Using the menu planned in First Class requirement 2a, make a listing showing a budget and the food amounts needed to feed 3 or more boys. Secure the ingredients.
      3. Evidence which pans, utensils, and other gear will be needed to melt and serve these meals.
      4. Demonstrate the procedures to follow in the safety handling and storage of fresh meats, dairy products, eggs, vegetables, and other perishable food products. Evidence how to properly dispose of army camp garbage, cans, plastic containers, and other rubbish.
      5. On i campout, serve as cook. Supervise your assistant(s) in using a stove or building a cooking burn. Set the breakfast, lunch, and dinner planned in First Class requirement 2a. Supervise the cleanup.
  • TOOLS
      1. Discuss when you should and should non use lashings.
      2. Demonstrate tying the timber hitch and clove hitch.
      3. Demonstrate tying the square, shear, and diagonal lashings by joining two or more poles or staves together.
      4. Use lashings to make a useful military camp gadget or structure.
  • NAVIGATION
      1. Using a map and compass, complete an orienteering course that covers at least ane mile and requires measuring the height and/or width of designated items (tree, belfry, canyon, ditch, etc.)
      2. Demonstrate how to apply a handheld GPS unit, GPS app on a smartphone or other electronic navigation system. Use a GPS to discover your current location, a destination of your choice, and the route you will have to get there. Follow that route to arrive at your destination.
  • NATURE
      1. Identify or show show of at least 10 kinds of native plants found in your local area or campsite location. You may show evidence by identifying fallen leaves or fallen fruit that you find in the field, or as part of a drove you have made, or by photographs you lot accept taken.
      2. Identify two ways to obtain a weather forecast for an upcoming activity. Explicate why weather condition forecasts are important when planning for an effect.
      3. Describe at least three natural indicators of impending chancy weather, the potential unsafe events that might result from such weather weather condition, and the appropriate actions to have.
      4. Describe extreme weather conditions yous might see in the outdoors in your local geographic area. Discuss how you would make up one's mind ahead of fourth dimension the potential take a chance of these types of weather condition dangers, culling planning considerations to avoid such risks, and how you would prepare for and respond to those weather conditions.
  • AQUATICS
      1. Successfully consummate the BSA swimmer test.4&5

      3. Identify the basic parts of a canoe, kayak, or other boat. Identify the parts of a paddle or an oar.
      4. Depict proper body positioning in a watercraft, depending on the type and size of the vessel. Explain the importance of proper trunk position in the boat.
      5. With a helper and a practice victim, prove a line rescue both as tender and rescuer. (The practice victim should exist approximately 30 feet from shore in deep water.)5
  • Get-go AID AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
      1. Demonstrate bandages for a sprained ankle and for injuries on the head, the upper arm, and the collarbone.
      2. By yourself and with a partner, show how to:
        • Transport a person from a smoke-filled room
        • Ship for at least 25 yards a person with a sprained ankle.
      3. Tell the v most common signals of a centre assail. Explain the steps (procedures) in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
      4. Tell what utility services exist in your home or meeting identify. Describe potential hazards associated with these utilities, and tell how to respond in emergency situations.
      5. Develop an emergency action plan for your home that includes what to do in example of fire, storm, power outage, and h2o outage.
      6. Explain how to obtain potable h2o in an emergency.
  • Fitness
      1. After completing 2d Course requirement 7a, be physically active at to the lowest degree 30 minutes every day for five days a calendar week for four weeks. Go along track of your activities.
      2. Share your challenges and successes in completing First Class requirement 8a. Set a goal for standing to include physical action as office of your daily life.
  • CITIZENSHIP

The projection(s) must not exist the same service project(s) used for Tenderfoot requirement 7b and Second Class requirement 8e. Explain how your service to others relates to the Spotter Police force.
  • LEADERSHIP
    1. Tell someone who is eligible to join Boy Scouts, or an inactive Male child Scout, virtually your Scouting activities. Invite him to an outing, activity, service project or meeting. Tell him how to join, or encourage the inactive Boy Picket to become agile. Share your efforts with your Scoutmaster or other developed leader.
  • Lookout man SPIRIT
    1. Demonstrate spotter spirit past living the Spotter Oath and Lookout man Law. Tell how you have washed your duty to God and how you have lived four different points of the Scout Law (different from those points used for previous ranks) in your everyday life.
    2. While working toward the Beginning Class rank, and after completing 2d Course requirement 11, participate in a Scoutmaster briefing.
    3. Successfully consummate your lath of review for the First Form rank.

Notes:

The requirements for the Scout, Tenderfoot, 2nd Class, and Offset Class ranks may be worked on simultaneously; however, these ranks must exist earned in sequence.

Alternative Requirements for the Kickoff Class rank are available for Scouts with physical or mental disabilities if they encounter the criteria listed in the Male child Scout Requirements book.

5Under certain infrequent weather condition, where the climate keeps the outdoor water temperature below safe levels the year-round, or where there are no suitably safety and accessible places (outdoors or indoors) inside a reasonable traveling distance to swim at any time during the year, the quango Scout executive and advocacy committee may, on an individual Scout footing, authorize an alternative for requirements 6a and 6e. The local council may establish appropriate procedures for submitting and processing these types of requests. All the other requirements, none of which necessitate entry in the water or entry in a watercraft on the water, must be completed as written.
